| My heart aches at the innocence & plight of my child who says, “Papa, please don’t take me to the hospital, I won’t do mischief at home; I will be a good girl, I promise.” Aishika, my 8-yr-old daughter, is diagnosed with Thalassemia Major. It is a blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to get oxygen to its organs. The ones detected with this disease need blood transfusions every 15-30 days for survival. Aishika thinks we take her to the hospital to punish her for being mischievous at home. Little does she know, we are terrified by the thought of losing her and not having her around to see her mischief.
Aishika was a month & half old when she was diagnosed with this blood disorder. And ever since then, our life revolves around hospitals and blood transfusions every 15 days. Missing out on even a single transfusion can cost us her life. Each time we take her for her transfusion, she bursts into tears at the sight of the hospital door itself. My daughter is too young, to come to terms with painful hospital visits, not being able to play like other kids or go to school and have a normal life. The only way to put an end to her sufferings is Bone Marrow Transplant. We are a family of 3 including Aishika, neither her mother nor I was a perfect match to become a donor. After years of fighting and looking for a donor, our prayers have finally been answered. We found a donor with a match of 10/10. However, the cost of the surgery to rescue my daughter is a staggering Rs. 25 lakh. |
